President's Message
Congratulations to all of our Fundamentals students who completed the program this week. We hope you have enjoyed building on your bridge knowledge and developing your confidence at the table. The next step is supervised play, and we encourage you to come along and continue your bridge journey with us. We look forward to seeing you at the tables and watching your skills continue to grow.
Next Wednesday we welcome a new group of beginners to the Club for the final beginner lessons of 2026. Introducing new players to bridge is vital to our future, and I thank Barb and our teaching team for the wonderful work they do in helping people discover and enjoy our game. Please make our newcomers feel welcome if you see them around the Club - they are an important part of the future of our bridge community.
The Australian National Championships concluded last week, with Canberra Bridge Club members achieving outstanding results. Congratulations to Peter Reynolds and partner on winning the Mixed Butler Pairs - Stage 2. A special congratulations also to Adam Robinson and Jacques Cherbuin on reaching Stage 3 of the Open Butler Pairs in their first ANC - an excellent achievement. Well done to all of our members who represented the Club so successfully.

Graded Teams Saturday is happening on 22nd August!
On Saturday the 22nd August 2026, the Canberra Bridge Club will be running its first all day, teams red-point event of the year.
This will be a graded teams, so please enter in teams of 4 or 6.
The field will also be graded – likely into A, B and C grades with a possible additional category for current supervised players, subject to numbers. The exact subdivisions will be decided closer to the time, based on entries.

Wednesday Night Pizzas
The Wednesday night pizzas provide the opportunity for social interaction while enjoying a pizza sampling. It provides a great opportunity to talk to and socialise with your fellow players, which is not always the case when engaged in playing bridge.

Cardplay Wednesdays! - next one on 5th August
The 2nd Cardplay Wednesday workshop is happening on the 5th August.
You can come with a regular partner or on your own – players will be accommodated as necessary.
- What Time? 5-00 pm Until 6-30 pm (hopefully accessible to both daytime players and workers).
- How Much Does it Cost? $15 per session (charged through MyABF or paid by cash on the day).
- Who is it For? It is aimed at players who have recently transitioned from Supervised Play to B-Grade as well as B-Grade players who may find that they have a clear understanding of system but have received less assistance in how to actually play the cards. In terms of difficulty is it intended to be slightly easier than the workshops William Jenner-O’Shea runs from time to time at the club.
- What is the Format? There will be a brief (ten minute) introduction to a topic of cardplay followed by six to eight hands where the bidding will be provided and participants will be able to put the lesson to work at the table. There will also be handouts with a half-page discussion on every hand explaining the relevant tricks, tips and principles.
- Who is giving the lectures? Initially, Steve Geddes will be providing the lectures for the first few months, although it is likely that down the track other teachers from the Club will run different sessions.

I mentioned last week that we held a successful raffle for the Youth Triathlon. We also sold fundraising mugs - there are still plenty left. There are 4 designs and we have blue, lilac, yellow and white options which are available at the club.
