President's Message
On Monday afternoon, the new committee held its first meeting. The main purpose was to appoint chairs for each of the subcommittees that keep this club running smoothly.
Lesley Gunson is our new Vice President and has volunteered to take on the job of looking after the House subcommittee. If you have ideas or issues or can volunteer to help, Lesley is the person to see.
We are lucky to have Kate Latimer continuing with the Promotion and Social subcommittee and Jodi Tutty is taking on Education. Look out for their announcements as they reach out to the wider community for those who are interested in working with them.
Rob Hurst is continuing as Tournament secretary - thank you Rob! The calendar for next year has been approved so look out for it on the website and start planning.
We are very grateful to two club members who are not on the main committee but have stepped up with their specialist knowledge to assist the club. Michael French will chair the IT subcommittee and Deb Milner will be working on Governance and Ethics.
The year is coming to an end quickly but I feel the committee is off to a great start. I look forward to catching up with you all around the club.
Wendy
Melbourne Cup
There were 19 tables here at the Club with Steve Geddes celebrating the running of the 2026 Melbourne Cup. The chocolate dipped strawberries were a highlight! Thanks to all the organisers including Nicole, Sylvia and Lesley and Janet and Liz for running the sweeps. Some pics below, including best dressed on the day.

Talent Search
Our members have a lot of skills - at and away from the card table (refer also to Canberra Choice Awards below).
The new committee is very interested in hearing from anyone who has skills and experience in: web design; print design; social media; and stats!
We are also looking for those exceptional (fun) people who can help with social events. Many hands make etc etc.
Please call Kate on 0407 70 28 70 for more details or to express interest.
November Teams League Cancelled
Unfortunately we only received nine entries for the next month’s scheduled Teams League. This would have meant that players would all need to compete in one field and we would rather preserve the graded nature of the event.
Accordingly, we have cancelled the November event. The Teams League will recommence in February 2027 in the same format as this year (two nights a fortnight apart within each month) details will be published early in 2027.
The previous September and October events have been very well received and we look forward to building on those events next year in February, March and April.

Unlocking the Honour Boards: The Barry Turner Teams
Barry Turner was a long-time treasurer of the ACTBA/BFACT. He was primarily responsible for securing the finances for building the first CBC clubroom from 1974 to 1981 (Stage 1) and later extension (Stage 2) in 1989. The room where we play most of our bridge at CBC (Stage 2) is named the Barry Turner Room.
Barry Turner was a driving force behind the Summer Festival of Bridge. He was a generous financial donor to the club during his lifetime and left the ACTBA money in his will. This is known as The Barry Turner Fund and supports ACT representative teams competing in the ANC and ACT players who are selected for The Australian National Teams.
For more see History of bridge in the ACT
The Barry Turner Teams Event will be held from 17th November at the CBC.

Walk and Deliver
Beginners bridge classes start in January, and we need your help!
We want to get the word out there about our forthcoming beginners lessons, starting in January.
Can you help?
It’s easy!
You’ll see small pamphlets with info on the tables at the Club. Grab some and pop them in letterboxes around your neighbourhood. You’ll get fit, the dog will love the exercise and hopefully we’ll fill our beginners courses to bursting.
Let’s see if we can build on last year’s distribution and spread the word even further. Thanks!
