Club News
The Committee has made available for members’ scrutiny the concept plans for the building. These are on the table near the Olive Lott room.
Comments have been invited from those Members who wish to provide their views to the Committee on the ideas outlined in the concept plans.
It is important to note that the Committee has not indicated a preference for any of the ideas submitted, as it will consider the comments submitted by members in the survey conducted last year together with any comments that are received on the concept ides for the building.
The Committee will keep the Members informed progressively about possible directions with regard to the building and seek support for any proposed future action regarding the building.
We would welcome any comments or suggestions from members about the designs addressed to Mary Tough
Another reminder that the results of the Member Feedback Survey are still viewable on the CBC Website here.
Working Bee 9 May
There will be an internal working bee in the Barry Turner Room on Thursday 9 May immediately after the morning session (1:30pm) for a general tidy up of the room -- sorting through the bidding boxes etc. If you would like to help out please contact the Managers so jobs can be allocated.
An external working bee is also being planned for mulching of our garden beds, pruning etc. A date for that has not yet been set, but keep an eye on this space….
Expression of Interest - Novice Support Coordinator
The Canberra Bridge Club (CBC) regards support for its novice players as a high priority and takes all possible steps to integrate them fully into the club’s milieu. The Novice Support Coordinator has overall responsibility for this important task.
The Contract & Employment Sub-Committee is seeking expressions of interest in the position. It should be noted that in light of recent changes to employed and volunteer roles at the CBC, the position description is currently under review and will be made available shortly. It is expected that the tasks of the position will require a commitment of, on average, 12 hours per month.

TIP OF THE WEEK
System cards
There are two sorts of system card ─ Standard and Simple. The Standard card is quite comprehensive; it is used at major congresses and national tournaments. The simple card is just that; it is used at minor congresses and important club events.
We are not required to use a system card for ordinary duplicate sessions at the Canberra Bridge Club. Nevertheless, it’s quite a good idea for you and your partner to carry Simple cards. There are all sorts of advantages: (i) You are much less likely to have misunderstandings about conventional bids; (ii) Instead of asking, your opponents can consult your card to learn the meaning of your bidding; (iii) It is very helpful for system discussion with a new partner; and so on.
There are a few things to note: (i) You must not consult your system once you take the cards from a new board (but, as far I know, there is nothing to stop you looking at your system between hands); (ii) The writing on your system must be legible; (iii) When new opponents arrive at your table, you should draw their attention to your system card; (iv) Try not to leave your system card behind ─ it is all too easy to do.
If you have not used a system card previously, you should try it.

Tuesday Night Competition moving to RealBridge
From 25 June 2024 until end of August, Tuesday night competition is moving to RealBridge.
To encourage wider participation in RB on Tuesday nights. Visitors will be charged at the same rate as our members for the duration of the RB winter season. CBC club members will be charged $12 per session.
A two nights Butler Pairs event will be played on 25 June -2 July, as a warm up for ANC participants in Orange.
Mentoring in May
Rob Hurst has been very busily match making the mentors and mentees and by now most people will have an assigned partnership.
To facilitate the payment process we ask that the mentees as they walk in to a session, take a yellow slip located under the TV screen.
Please fill in the details in this slip and give it to the director with the table slip.
