A message from our Chief Director – Ian Robinson

The new laws of Bridge came into effect in August 2017. There are heaps of changes, some small some large. Unless the players call the Director when an irregularity occurs, the Directors will not obtain any practice or experience in using the new laws. So, please call the Director whenever an irregularity occurs – no matter how significant or insignificant. By calling the Director, you as a player will also gain more knowledge of the ‘rights and wrongs’ in playing Bridge at a competitive level.

Keith’s bridge playing experiences:

Knowing my partner is very competitive, appears to do everything right and she does not tolerate incompetent play, I learnt some time ago there are only two acceptable reasons for not leading her suit – 1. Having no cards in the suit and 2. A death wish!

So, as Declarer and facing AQJ in dummy, I lead low and ask for the Jack. After winning in Dummy with the Jack, I ask for Dummy to play the Ace. We later lost the Queen to the King (on my left). My partner queried why I did not take the second finesse. I responded that I had heard and read that on average only one in two finesses work!

It was at this point in time that my partner looked me sternly in the eyes and with a rather firm voice stated that the difference between genius and stupidity at the bridge table is that genius has its limits!

And to all from the Managers of the Canberra Bridge Club, we wish you a wonderful Christmas and New Year Festive Season.

Kind regards

Kerry and Keith
