Dear Members

From the President.......

A big thank you to our hardworking convenors of the Christmas parties, Claire Hughes and Mary Tough, who did a marvellous job.

Thanks to all the generous members who played on Monday and Wednesday from which we raised $500 for Multiple Sclerosis from the (non-bridge) games.

There is only one week left to bring in presents for Barnardos to include in Christmas hampers: non-perishable food items or presents for teenage boys such as t-shirts or vouchers for movies or sports stores will be very welcome. Please place them under the Christmas tree.

Don’t forget our Christmas raffle – the hamper, a Christmas cake, alcohol – the list of prizes goes on.

Best wishes,

CBC Christmas Party events – Monday 4th & Wednesday 6th December

CBC had both their Christmas parties this week (Monday and Wednesday), and for the first time the Club trialled the “Catered option” with a catered lunch by Coast to Coast Golden Roast - a selection of succulent meats with hot potatoes, salads, desserts, fresh bread and condiments.  From a Convenors point of view, it was an easy gig with no shopping, no cooking or preparing of food, and very little set-up and clean-up.

Each day included a lucky door prize (donated) as well as two party games (conducted by Chris and Pam) within the sessions.  At the Wednesday party we also gave prizes to both pairs of N/S & E/W who scored the closest to 50% (parcel of chocolates).

Attendance numbers were a little down from last year, however, MANY members provided lots of positive feedback and praise.  The positive feedback included favourable comments for the change to catering, including comments like – “food was very tasty and service excellent”, “less work for members”, etc.

I would like give a BIG thank you to our President Pam, and our Monday Convenor Claire Hughes who did a fabulous job!  Thanks also to John Hughes, Cathi Bywater and Susan Walters, and all the volunteers who donated cakes and slices for both morning teas, and the two members who donated lucky door prizes for both days.

We had a lot of members offering their help, but for once we did not need it.  But don’t worry, I’m sure the Club will need help again soon with lots of other things happening.

What is an advance sacrifice?

Best wishes

Dear Heartless,

An advance sacrifice is sacrificing against the opponents' best contract before they know what that best contract is. For example:

At teams scoring only the opponents are vulnerable. LHO deals and opens 1C pard pre-empts with 3H, and RHO tries a natural and game-forcing 3S. You hold:

Obviously, since pard holds AKQT987 in hearts, pard cannot hold an outside defensive trick, since then pard would then be too strong for a weak jump overcall of 3H. So you know (but the opponents do not yet know) that the opponents' best contract is 4S or 5S, scoring eleven tricks for +650.

Hence select the advance sacrifice of 6H. With both opponents heartless, that is twin heart voids, one of them may misguess to bid 6S, thus giving your team a 13 imp pickup.

Best wishes

Parking in the Clubhouse Car Park

Can all members be considerate when parking in the Clubhouse car park. That is, try to park well within the marked yellow guidelines, park close to the kerb and do not double park behind other cars restricting their access on exit. This is particularly necessary on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings when the car park is quite full.

Thank you for your consideration.

Kind regards

Kerry and Keith
