FROM MY DESK ...................

During the month of May, one of our club stalwarts – Liz Van der Hor – accepted the task of managing the mentoring programme. Which we have conducted over May for the last couple of years. Altogether we had 40 requests for mentors and 31 volunteers to look after them. A particular feature of the programme this year was the high number of new players from the supervised player group who participated.

It is fair to say that the programme is a success and that we are very lucky as a club to have some of our top players willing to act as mentors.

When we offer the programme next year, I strongly recommend it to you. It offers a wonderful opportunity for beginners, novices and intermediate players to obtain tips from better players.

On your behalf I extend sincere thanks to Liz and the mentors. Liz, you did a fabulous job and it is appreciated by all.

This is an annual event and was run very successfully last Sunday. The event attracted 20 teams, the members of which enjoyed the play and the excellent lunch and morning and afternoon teas and post play nibbles and drinks.

Again, on your behalf, I extend our thanks to the team of helpers led most ably by Mary Tough. The rest of the team included, Claire (creator of the Chicken, Corn and Bacon Soup) and John Hughes, Cathi Bywater, Pam Crichton, Rosa Ferranda, Julia Hoffman, Lisa Westwood, Susan Walters, Kerry Holmes, Peter Andersson, Ella Beer, Bev Crossman, Val Carmody (Lentil Soup), Kerry Butcher (Pumpkin Soup) and Lesley Gunston (Vegetable and Ham Soup), Niek Van Vucht who managed the bar and the many members who cooked up a storm and provided cakes, slices and biscuits which were consumed with gusto by the players.

I also say thank you to Richard Brightling who for two years has mown the footpaths and has now decided to call it quits.

At the time of writing the Australian teams are competing in the Asia Pacific Bridge Championships in Soeul. The Australian Womens' Team includes three of our club players – Margaret Bourke, Jodi Tutty and Marianne Bookalil. The team is coached by John Yoon a local youth player of Korean descent who speaks the local language and the Non Playing Captain is David Appleton. Both of these are also CBC members. Arjuna Delivera is also in Soeul as part of the Australia 2 Senior's Team.

I have sent a message of support to the whole team on your behalf.

Happy bridging

Perelle Scales, President
