President's Corner

Week 17 – 26/01/2017

CBC, the Centre of Bridge in Canberra

Dear Members,

It would be remiss of me if, in this my first newsletter as President, I did not acknowledge the achievements of my predecessor, Peter Giles. Peter has shown remarkable tenacity, ingenuity and commitment to ensuring that the Club is in a sound financial space going forward and that it is an enjoyable place to play bridge. He has set a very high benchmark for us all.

On behalf of all members I offer Peter sincere thanks and wish him well with his health.

It is up to all of us to ensure that we continue to volunteer our time, energy and skills to the Club as so often encouraged by Peter to do. Only by doing so will we be able to maintain the Club's relatively good financial health and be able to continue to provide a place where we can exercise our brains and enjoy the camaraderie which we enjoy.

As for me, I feel privileged to have this opportunity and look forward to working, albeit in a slightly different role, with the very active committee we have and with and for all of you and the game we love.

As you are aware the Summer Festival of Bridge has been and gone for another year. Thank you for putting up with the inevitable disruptions to our normal routine caused by the CBC “hosting” some of the events, including Youth Week and the finals of the Women’s and Seniors Teams. Hosting these events has brought in revenue which we will use to help maintain our venue and facilities at a high standard.

The next “big” bridge event is the Gold Coast Congress later this month. I am sure that we all wish those members participating the very best of luck.

It is said that imitation is the highest form of flattery. If this is true, then prepare to be flattered Peter as I have chosen to imitate you by concluding with a line for the week; or in my case month:

If you have the slightest touch of masochism, you'll love the game of bridge.

Enjoy your bridge.
