President's Corner

Week 34 - 25/08/2016
CBC, the Centre of Bridge in Canberra

Dear Members,

Thank you to the members who have welcomed me back this week from my recent overseas trip. My time in Morocco was very enjoyable and the cruise part was ok but could have been better.

I would like to thank the anonymous donor of money to the club that provided the funds for a new set of Table Cloths and to Bev Crossman and Kerry Butcher for their work on finding fabric and actually making them. You will see them shortly with the next change of table clothes in the Barry Turner room. A very generous effort by the people involved.

As I am about to kind of disappear again, and hopefully not for long, I would like to remind members of the coming AGM, Tuesday 27th September at 5 PM. Please come along and support your committee, nibbles and drinks after the meeting and stay on and play.

A lot of members will have noticed the new air conditioning units that have been installed in the Olive Lott room. The aim is to have this room as comfortable for play as the Barry Turner room. The air conditioning is a huge step in the right direction regarding comfort. Heat when you want it and cooling without the noise of the old system. So another step forward for the club.

I am not sure why we are having chairs being broken in the Barry Turner room. They are expensive to buy replacement parts for and are best used just to sit in, not stand on, nor lean back onto two legs whilst boards are launched from table to table. I would ask that more care is taken with furniture and fittings.

A few members have asked me about the commission arrangement with Flight Centre. It still in place so we can obtain the commission if you book and ensure they know you are with the club. Our existing contract runs until the end of the year and I am hopeful that it will continue next year. It has been a steady source of income for the club.

I think most members are aware of the commission arrangement with the Southern Cross. If you don’t know, please ask at our office for the form to complete.

Happy Bridging

Peter Giles
