From the President:

Keith Jorgensen is moving on to a new phase in his life, which, sadly for the Canberra Bridge Club, means that he is leaving us. His last day in the office will be Thursday 29 March.

On Wednesday 28 March we will have a morning tea as a farewell for Keith to thank him for his friendly, helpful, cheerful service to CBC and all its members. Please let me know by phone or email if you are able to bring a contribution to morning tea on that day. Normal bridge will be played on that morning.

I hope that we will continue to see Keith in the club as a player, when his travels permit.

Emily Inglis, who some of you may remember from the time she spent in the office last year, will take over Keith’s role from Thursday 5 April. Please make her very welcome.

Best wishes from Launceston,

We are sorry to inform members of the death on 18th March, of Rita Lawry, a much respected and liked member of our club. We send our condolences to her family.

ABC Gardening Program

This Friday night the ABC Gardening program presented at 7.30pm will feature the garden of Sue Pillans, our club secretary. I’m sure members will be interested to have a sneak peak at her lovely native garden.

Dear Hilda Lirsch,

When should I double the opponents' slam? For example as dealer I held:

So I therefore opened 1D. LHO overcalled 1S. Partner passed throughout the auction. RHO leaped to 4NT, Keycard Blackwood. I passed. LHO promised one (or four) keycards in spades. Now RHO bid 6S. Should I double?

Best wishes,

Redoubled with an overtrick

Dear redoubled with an overtrick,

No, doubling the opponents' slam because you hold two aces is a losing proposition in the long run. One or both of the opponents may hold a void.

Rather, the best time to double a slam is when the slam will make unless you double. You hold a void in a side suit. Your lead-directing double, known as a Lightner Double after its inventor, Teddy Lightner, asks partner to find an unusual opening lead which you will ruff.

Best wishes,

Bridge For Kids

CBC is aware that bridge is a game not being taken up in large numbers by the younger generation. For our game to survive and thrive we must encourage our youth to play.

As a result we have been given BFACT funding to run “Bridge for Kids” which is a Queensland Bridge Association initiative.

The intention is to hold a two hour session at the CBC premises on the first or second Tuesday of each public school holiday period. Our next session is Tuesday 17 April, 2018.

The 2018 session would start at 10am finishing at 12 noon with ice cream and pizza.

Cost $2.

It is expected that a parent, grandparent or guardian would accompany each minor and assist if needed.

The target age is ten to twelve but younger ie eight, and older, to eighteen would be acceptable.

Card games include any trick taking game such as Old Maid, Hearts and mini bridge for older children. A competent player would supervise each table of four. This person could be an accompanying adult. As participants progress they may consider further lessons or participate in an accommodating bridge session.

We are asking the club membership to embrace this initiative by considering and volunteering to assist where possible.

Donations of packs of playing cards, and other card games would be welcomed.

Names of possible participants and helpers can be given to the office for the attention of Elainne Leach or Patricia McDonald. We can be contacted by email. Please help make this a success!
