From the President:

Thank you to those who worked on Monday to add some Christmas atmosphere to the club: Mary Tough, Emily Inglis, John Hempenstall, Niek Van Vucht, Patricia McDonald, Val Carmody, Lisa Westwood and Janet Kahler.

Many thanks also to the Christmas party workers – Sue and Allen Scerri, Chris Sheen, Patricia McDonald, Jeanette Harper, Ella Beer, Muerine Thomas, Ian Robinson, Chris Quail, Nola Arnold, Margaret Kyburz, Janet Kahler and Kerry Butcher. Jodi Tutty not only directed the day with her usual good humour, she also helped to clean up afterwards.

I enjoyed catching up with some players on Wednesday evening at their friendly Christmas get-together, and with daytime players on Thursday at the Christmas lunch.

Best wishes,

We are in need of helpers to assist with the supervised play at the club on Monday nights (from 17th December 2018), Thursday mornings (from 6th December 2018) and Friday mornings (from 21st December 2018)  until 1st  February. The supervised sessions are for practice play only. You are not required to teach.

Helpers Needed for Summer Festival of Bridge

CBC again has the opportunity to help one of the major bridge tournaments in Australia to run smoothly and also to earn some money for our club.

We need many helpers to assist with setting up at the Rex Hotel on Tuesday 8 January, and to pack down after play on Thursday 17 January.

Not all the jobs are hard physical work – e.g. tablecloths, bidding boxes etc.

Christmas Barnardos Donations

CBC has a tradition of present giving at Christmas. This year we would like to direct this to Barnardos.

If you wish to help, please bring a donation towards their Christmas hampers –(not wrapped) presents for teenage boys aged 14-18 (e.g. vouchers for movies or sports stores, t-shirts, food such as Christmas puddings & more standard items such as jam, cereal, Milo...).

We need the donations by Friday 14th December.

Please place donated gifts under our Christmas tree.

Dear Hilda Lirsch

What has been nicknamed “the hippopotamus contract”?

Best wishes,

The great green greasy Limpopo river

Dear Limpopo river,

Because it is so ungainly 5NT has been dubbed “the hippopotamus contract”. If it scores an overtrick, then slam should have been bid. If it scores an undertrick, then the auction should have terminated in 3NT or 4NT.

Best wishes,

Notice for all Supervised Players, December 2018 - January 2019

Monday & Friday Sessions ONLY

Supervised sessions, with a lesson beforehand, will continue in December until, and including, Monday 10th December and Friday 14th December.

  • Normal supervised sessions, with lesson, will resume on Monday 4th February (7pm), and Friday 8th February 2019, with Friday commencing once more at 9.30am.

Following those dates, your teachers will take a break over the summer period.  However, supervised play will continue, but without the lesson beforehand. There will be a volunteer to look after you, an experienced player who will be there to help the Director to organise the session and to assist you.  These sessions are designed to give you lots of play practice over the summer period.

  • Monday evenings will still begin at 7pm.
  • Friday mornings will commence at 10am.

It is important that you arrive at the Club and are seated 15 minutes before the start of the session, so the Director can arrange the movement.

Changes to Thursday sessions in 2019

From Thursday 7th February there will be a new format for Thursday sessions.

There will be a short lesson from 9.30-9.50, followed by duplicate play. There will be a charge for this lesson, of $5 for CBC members and $6 for non- members. This is similar to the format of Master the Basics (on Wednesday mornings.)

These Thursday lessons will be different topics, at a more advanced level than the Monday evening and Friday morning lessons.

There will be a supervisor for duplicate play commencing at 10am, but it will no longer be the teacher but a volunteer who will help the players and assist the Director.

Monday evening and Friday morning supervised players are welcome to attend the Thursday lesson, and/or the subsequent play session.
