A big congratulation to Barb Toohey, Ann Pettigrew, and Jeanette Grahame who recently became ABF accredited teachers. WELL DONE!

A very big ‘thank you’ to the committee members and John Hempenstall who assisted with branding and labelling the new boards the CBC has recently purchased. Your volunteer time is greatly appreciated, and the Club could not function without the help provided by all our volunteers.

Dear Hilda Lirsch,

Q: When should my opening lead be an ace?

Listen to the auction.

For example, you hold:
A98
43
AK3
JT653

LHO deals and opens 1C, promising at least three clubs. RHO jumps to 2NT, inviting game. LHO accepts with 3NT, all pass. Other things being equal, the textbooks recommend leading from your longest suit against 3NT. But here other things are not equal; your long club suit lacks the top three honours, LHO has promised some club length, and your hand in combination with the auction suggests that pard holds minimal values.

However, pard's minimal values might be Jxxxx in diamonds. So you lead your ace of diamonds. Dummy thoughtfully displays Qx of diamonds, allowing the defence to cash the first five diamonds.

Best Wishes,
Hilda
