STANDBY PLAYERS FOR

THE SUMMER FESTIVAL OF BRIDGE

The Summer Festival of Bridge is fast approaching. It will be held at the QT Hotel, 1 London Circuit from the 10 – 22 January 2017. There will be no cost (unless you wish to make a small payment) and gold masterpoints to be won.
This year Perelle Scales and Justine Beaumont are managing the partnership desk on behalf of the Canberra Bridge Club (CBC). The CBC will earn money for undertaking this activity. You do not need to commit to an entire event; although you are welcome to do so. If you are free to be on standby for even one session it will appreciated. Players of all levels, including novice are needed.

Please advise Perelle 0450961935, Justine 0414637075 or the managers 628522382 if you can assist.

President's Corner

Week 6 – 3/11/2016
CBC, the Centre of Bridge in Canberra

Dear Members,

This week the club held our annual Melbourne Cup Day. Many people expressed very positive words about the day. A huge thank you to Mary Tough for all her wonderful efforts to put the day together. Mary has done a wonderful job for a “lengthy period”. Of course, a big thank you to all the other people who worked on setting up, shopping, kitchen work, the wonderful flower arrangements etc. A very big team effort, extremely well done. Members may have views on the format of the day, please come forward with suggestions and be prepared to put your name forward to participate in the work.

Unfortunately I need to inform you that our negotiations with a potential new Principal Director have been unsuccessful. That person will not be joining the club. The committee will now consider alternative options.

I also need to inform you that I have decided to step down from the position of President in February. Most of you are aware that I have some health issues. It has become clearer by the day that I need to put much more time and effort into managing those issues. You may be interested to know that in February I will have been 3 years in the role, before that, 1 year as Vice President and 5 years on the general committee. Hopefully you will agree, (kindly) that it is time for a break. I will continue to help the club where I can and especially on one of the projects.

Last week I referred to the changes regarding our “Flight Centre Trailing Commission”. Largely from this point, any new bookings will be best managed through Flight Centre located at Dickson shops. Face to face or use the following contact details.

The car park seems to be a never ending problem. I have mentioned many times about using the public park as well as our own. Additionally I would like to draw some driver’s attention to the YELLOW lines in the car park. They are placed there to assist in where to park. It is “Best” to park between them.

Planning is well underway for the two Christmas Parties and the signup sheets will go up shortly. Please let the office know if you are able to assist with either function. There is a lot of setting up, kitchen work, packing up etc. It would be wonderful to see some new faces involved in undertaking some of these tasks.

Members are welcome to make suggestions about the running of the club, speak with a member of committee, the managers or use the suggestion box. If speaking with the managers, it is best to ask them to do something. That is, not to bounce into the office and tell them what to do. This has been occurring just a bit too frequently of late.

Lines for this week:

• If you help someone when they are in trouble they will remember you, when they're in trouble again

• Alcohol does not solve any problems, but then neither does milk.

Happy Bridging
Peter Giles
